Guess what? I like Black Friday! I've gone out at midnight a few times and stood in lines for hours in the past and even enjoyed that. I have never seen anybody hurt, threatened, angered, or nasty beyond the usual occasional grump you'll meet in life. I have seen a lot of family and friend groups out having a blast. I've never gone for the hottest items, but have gotten the kind of deals that allow me to get nicer items (mostly household items, actually) for discount prices. I can't stand in lines like that any more, so I've done a lot of Black Friday type shopping online instead. I am a sucker for a great deal. Today we went out (around noon) and stopped a few places to check some items out. The atmosphere was festive and excited. We were delighted they still had some of the limited Build-A-Bear Christmas 2013 critters. I've managed to get one each year for 4 or 5 years running now and I love the collection! This year they're sock monkeys. I have a serious weakness for sock monkeys. Because of the way things worked out we actually got one for me AND one for each of the girls too! I'm sure there are plenty of examples of greed and selfishness, but we've enjoyed the fun, festivities, and party of it all! via Facebook

Whipped up the BEST fruit fly catcher EVER. Yes, apple cider vinegar with a touch of dish-soap works fine. And there are some other ways that works fine. But this is by far the most successful I've tried. I took a plastic drink bottle, filled the bottom couple of inches with warm water, added a couple of teaspoons of yeast and some sugar, then used a knife to poke holes in the bottle a bit above the "water" line. The yeasty smell attracts the fruit flies like crazy!!! They slip in through the holes then either die in the yeast mixture or wander in the top of the bottle until they die in the yeast mixture. :) My biggest problem with the ACV method was run-away fruit flies who were attracted, but not done all the way in. I am not going to admit to how many fruit flies I have caught, because that's gross, but trust me -- it's highly effective :D via Facebook

This pretty girl is Priscilla Rich. She was part of the very first litter we fostered. Of that litter of 4 kittens my mom adopted two, we adopted one, and this one was adopted by another family. Well, last week I got an email that the family wanted to send Priscilla back. Since she's out baby girl we couldn't let her go somewhere else!!! So she's back. She's pretty anxious and nervous still (I think the family with young children was too hands-on for her developing shy nature), but she is actually doing a ton better than we initially expected. Priscilla and Shuri have even been found snuggling or playing together a time or two. They have been pretty comfortable with eachother from the get-go and I suspect there's some familiarity since they are sisters, after all. We've started introducing P to the rest of the house (after several days of security in the kitten room). Ginger gave her a hiss and true to her behavior as a kitten Priscilla just looked at her blankly. :) Ginger isn't actively hostile toward her, just sulky, but Priscilla is a big girl -- fluffy like Shuri, but much larger, and probably as big as Ginger now! Gin likes to be the cat in charge so we were worried P might allow herself to be pushed around by Ginger. If that happened we'd have a sad kitty, and that's no good :( BUT she seems to be brushing off Ginger's complaints just like she did as a little fluff ball. We're really sad that Priscilla didn't find her forever home when she was adopted out as that gorgeous little kitten, but we're happy to have her back. She may not be allowed to leave again! Also -- pictures of "pirate Shuri" with her poor eye that's still pretty sore today. She's totally laid back about it, but it's kinda pitiful anyway. That first picture of her she's actually just yawning, but looks quite fierce ;) via Facebook

We have a poor little pirate kitty tonight :( Shuri showed up with a nasty swollen eye! We got her in to the vet. Swelling, inflammation, blah, blah... basically looks like she ran her eyeball into something. None of us were there to see exactly what / when it happened. Glad to have great doctors dedicated to these sweet animals! Got a shot to help prevent infection and reduce inflammation and a goop to use 3x daily on her poor eyeball. She's not a big fan, but she has been really good about it, all in all. It's just so sad to look over at her relaxingn and see her left eye squeezed shut unless she wants to use it. via Facebook

Sabrina handed me a list for tomorrow. To Do: actividy days s.e.p.s take kate to school take a nap go shooping shooping list Dr. peppr lunch boxis for Sadrina (if you can find one.) littl hugs My assessment: Not a bad guess on spelling "activity", really. SEP's... yeah, those are tomorrow. already?! take kate to school -- way to go, spelling "school" right! take a nap -- great idea! go shooping -- I will have to call it shooping from now on. Dr. peppr -- sounds yummy ;) lunch box -- yes, the clip on Sabrina's lunch box broke a while ago and I haven't found a replacement bit. Sorry kid! and also... you can spell "school", but still flop the "b" in your own name?! Goose! littl hugs -- these are the drinks the girls take in their lunches and yes, they're almost gone. It's funner to think of them as keeping a store of small snuggles on hand. Love you Nina :) via Facebook

Kate checked out a recipe book at the school library the other day. It's all egg-based recipes. We've found a favorite! It's one we have heard of before, but just never tried. Rolly-poly omelettes. In each ziplock bag add 2 beaten eggs, salt, pepper, and favorite toppings. We don't have many great omelette toppings right now, but she diced some red and green bell peppers with shredded cheese and minced onion. Everyone gets their own favorite toppings! Just drop them in boiling water and cook for 15 minutes. The vegis are PERFECTLY cooked even! Not mushy, but not too crunchy either. I've heard of these used at trek, camping, girl's camp, scout camp, etc. The secret: They grow a LOT while they cook! Don't be tempted to add "a little more" because it looks like too little ;) AND: the girls like making them! For dinner tonight (and last night -- repeat performances are sometimes good) Sabrina made pancakes while Kate made the omelettes. via Facebook

I LOVE that Kate's class at school (6th grade) the kids take turns volunteering in UEI (I have no idea what UEI stands for, but it's the class for elementary age students with disabilities). This week Kate has had her turn and she comes home from school every day, excited to tell me about what she did with her buddy for the day. They go in for about 45 minutes, going over their afternoon recess. Today she was telling me all about the 9 year old girl (she actually calls them each by name) who loves using the "salon" activities. She sat and let the girl give her a makeover with the salon toys. She admitted that sometimes she kinda poked her eyes with the "eye shadow" and pulled her hair with the pretend curling iron, but the buddy was so happy doing it. What an incredible opportunity for these kids! I don't think I've ever seen an elementary school that does more to include and enjoy students who look, act, and learn differently than they do. via Facebook

Today I made dinner. A really good, but simple, dinner: crock pot roast, canned green beans, instant potatoes (the good pearl kind at least), then fresh homemade rolls. Yum! Lizzie was praying before dinner and asked "please help Mom to not suffer too much after this for making this great dinner." I am so ridiculously blessed to have my children! 7 things/facts that a lot of people don't know about me. "Comment or like and I'll give you a number." Except, I WON'T actually give you a number, but if you feel like playing along, feel free to post your own. You didn't warn me I'd be getting a number when I so innocently "liked" your post Stephanie! ;) 1: I hate cold cereal. My favorite "breakfast cereal" is melted butter with seasoned salt and Worcestershire sauce cooked on cheerios. Basically Chex Mix with only cheerios, but I grew up knowing them as "Grandpa O's" since I liked to make them with my grandpa when we visited. 2: I can find just about anything on the internet -- without running into what I'd term "icky" stuff*! If someone has thought of it, it's probably out there. If it's out there, I most likely can find it. (*being a self-proclaimed prude, "icky stuff" is a broad category.) 3: I danced for a dozen years or so, starting with solid ballet training, then a variety from tap, character, modern, jazz, social (to gold level), etc. My last dance class was into finals week when I started dating Michael. 4: I graduated from BYU in 2002 with a degree in Elementary Education with a minor in music, and just short of a minor in dance. 5: When I was young two of my brothers and I created a museum. It had some pretty awesome stuff (fossils, bones, artifacts, etc.) in it that our grandpa would send us (being a well known paleontologist, it was a good hook-up). I was stuck with the gift shop in my bedroom, though, because the boys shared a room and got all the good stuff in their room. 6: I like a lot of people and enjoy a wide variety of people, but only have one "real" friend. Fortunately I married him. Everyone else scares me too much. 7: I worked from the time I turned 16 until I was 6 months pregnant with our oldest child. Now I get to be a full time mother, which is what I always wanted. *political research call center (maybe this is why I hate phones so much? naw, I've always hated making phone calls) *Division of Arts Production (Theater) Costume Studio at BYU (yes, professional sewing. no, I won't hem your pants.) *a summer, then on-call for Campus Craft and Floral (floral arranging is fantastic!) *I did have to take a year off work during the Elementary Education program. The work is too intense so nobody is allowed to keep an outside job during that time. *Then I taught 4th grade for a year. I loved the kids, though the parents stressed me out. *Now I get to work 24/7 without break or vacation as a mama. If i was required to work outside the home I don't know what I'd do as I don't have enough functionality at present to do anything, but I love being here any time my kids need me. via Facebook

Mamas -- do any of you know of a brand of girls jeans that isn't skin tight? Lizzie has really muscular legs and every type we've tried on her lately she can barely get on, they're so tight above the knee! Even the exact same brand / cut she's wearing now is just slimmer enough to be uncomfortable. I can find skinny fit, super skinny, jeggings, and then there are bootcut (same size above the knee) and flare (supposed to be more relaxed above the knee, but didn't fit any better). Plus sized absolutely drowns her, but the fashion is so slim it just doesn't work for a girl with muscular thighs! I'm happy to order online or go farther afield, but I'd at least like to have a starting place. Bonus points if they happen to have short sizing too :) via Facebook
