January 30, 2014 at 08:01PM I got Great Dane! ! What Kind Of Dog Are You?

Nice :) I've decided that the purpose of these quizzes is so that in conjunction with our buying patterns, personal information, these provide a general psych profile. Now "They" know EVERYTHING about us!

In case any of you were feeling sorry for my forgotten waffle iron, it has continued to be plenty busy. I've continued to make liege waffles a few more times, the occasional tater tots, a batch of cake again, the pillsbury cinnamon rolls (worked nicely!) and today: blinis. Yup. They were an interesting experiment, lol. I was making blinis with Lizzie and saved the last bit of batter to play with in my waffle iron :) I made some crispier ones that were pretty nice looking, and some softer ones that had big holes in them. In any case, they more or less worked. I was very sad to get an email this week that the new waffle iron we ordered (a fancier, nicer one!) ended up being out of stock, so they refunded the money :( So I looked it up and they had it listed on the site again listed "in stock"! what the??? But I figured it out and re-ordered. Fingers crossed that it comes through this time!!! via Facebook

Yesterday morning Kate was in the conference room at school, sitting in one of the big spinning office chairs waiting for student council meeting. She was the only one in there and was facing the wall. Kate heard a teacher walk in so she spun the chair around suddenly, put her elbows on the table with her hands clasped together and said, in her most devious deep voice "I've been expecting you.". When the teacher caught her breath she managed to say "you know, you're kinda creepy.". Totally hilarious to hear about from my somewhat timid daughter! via Facebook

You know that "What's your mental age" quiz? (if not, just scroll through your newsfeed, I'm sure it's there). We each did it separately. Michael, the steady man of the house is a staid 28 years old. I'm 31. Then you get to our daughters... Sabrina: 34 Lizzie: a spritely 31 Kate: 37. Seriously. Maybe we should just let them be in charge of things?! ;) via Facebook

I'm glad to have learned about "misophonia". I cannot handle listening to people chew (that's my biggest issue, though there are a couple others). It doesn't just bother me, or only "bug" me when someone chews with their mouth open or otherwise generally obnoxious. I feel the way I expect I'd feel if I had ants crawling under my skin any time I can hear someone make mouth noises. Far beyond the usual "ewwww". I feel so much better discovering that this is a fairly recently recognized issue, feeling actual rage and major anxiety over something so stupid and normal! I'll continue with lots of background noise during meals and realize it's in my brain, not just in my mind. Interesting tidbit -- some studies show up to 50% of misophonia folk have been diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder of some sort, which is definitely an issue too. Ahhhhh, I love having a name for something and knowing it's REAL! Makes it much easier to deal with. via Facebook

last night Michael and I went to see I, Frankenstein. It was quite a good monster flick. Definitely some ewwwwww moments, but I don't remember particularly rude language and there was no sex. Back story was accurate to the real book, even! I wouldn't let the kids see it because it's rather dark, thematically, but it was a satisfying extension to the classic book. via Instagram http://ift.tt/KVUBpS

This morning in my barely awake, hardly functioning state I made blueberry muffin waffles. They were *that* quick and easy! I used a package of blueberry muffin mix, added the egg, oil, and milk as called for, and baked it in the waffle iron for about 45 seconds per side (rotating Belgian waffle iron). Lighter and fluffier with a different edge texture than a regular waffle, they are more like the ultimate muffin tops (the tasty kind, not the fashion faux pas). Perfectly fluffy and moist inside. Super yum!!! via Facebook

"You have a wild imagination and youthful nature that makes you a lot of fun to hang out with, but you’re also super organized and career oriented, constantly impressing those around you with how well-rounded you are. Your dream job would involve making kids laugh." Pretty much! And I think being a monster meshes well with Chewbacca, Mrs. Hudson, etc. Kinda off-beat as usual :P

I just took the Star Trek and Harry Potter "What Character are You" quizzes. It turns out I'm most like Chewbacca and Luna Lovegood. When I did the "Sherlock" quiz I was Mrs. Hudson. Clearly I'm not a hero, but I'm loyal, a little off-beat, and supportive. And possibly good for comedic relief. Also, I obviously haven't shaved my legs for quite a while (ala Chewy). via Facebook

Don't worry, friends. My waffle iron hasn't been left lonely the last while. I just haven't done anything fabulous and new to share. I did tater tots last night again. Yummy :) and I've done some more cookies. Today I've been focused instead on making jello. Lots of jello. And NOT in the waffle iron. I can't think of any way that would work out well. ;) The jello is part of Kate's science fair project we're finishing this week. If we'd known what we know now far enough in advance, I'm sure she could have come up with some sort of waffle iron based project... via Facebook

Kate has a birthday party to go to in the morning and we discovered that Funfinity (our favorite place to go gift shopping for birthday parties) is closed for renovation. So Kate and I hit Pinterest. We picked up a cool car pen we ran across at the grocery store, but were at a loss for an 11 year old boy she doesn't know well. We both came up with the same idea and made a run to Walmart for supplies. 3 1/2 hours from the time of realization, with a waffled dinner in between, and here's what we came up with: candy bar bouquet! She did know that he likes kit kats and Reeses at least! via Facebook

Tonight Michael had a waffled ham and cheese sandwich. No, make that TWO waffled cheese sandwiches! They clearly got allllll the thumbs up. Lizzie and I had waffled quesadillas. They were quite successful as well. In terms of the ideal quesadilla, a griddle or pan works as well, or better -- more of the surface of the tortilla becomes crispy. The tortilla is already so flat and firm that the waffle iron doesn't add crispy ridges, of course, just leaves square crispy sections. Because it is cooked hot and closed, though, the cheese reaches a delightfully volcanic consistency I generally lack in the stove-top variety, which we really enjoyed. Overall, very tasty. If I had all the usual comforts of home it's probably 60/40 whether I'd choose the stove / griddle or waffle iron to make a standard tortilla and cheese quesadilla (favoring the first). In a pinch if it's just me and my waffle iron, though, I'd find a quesadilla lovely. via Facebook

Priscilla (one of our cats) REALLY likes people food. Her favorite? Pizza. She has finally figured out how to get a pizza box open so she can take off with any left overs / crusts. Sadly for her, the pizza box from last night had a little cardboard piece that poked out in the back and confused her. She thought it was the tab the pokes out in the front to make it easy to open. So she gnawed in vain for quite a while. She did finally find the right cardboard tab this afternoon and finally got the box open. Lizzie got there just as Priscilla took off down the hall with a crust. Foiled again! via Facebook

Tater tots in a solid layer in a Belgian waffle iron -- amazing. Best way ever. Fried is nice and crispy, but so oily. Baked is nicer without the oil, but not enough crispiness. The waffle iron makes them wonderfully crispy without the oil! I assume this would work fine in a regular waffle iron as well, though it might need a little space between them. After a short time I was able to gently close the iron. In the deep waffle iron I placed frozen tater tots side by side. I would have filled the iron, but I only had the bottom of a package to try. Add a little creole seasoning and they're fabulous!!! Now I really want to get some sweet potato tots to try too! via Facebook

For Christmas I got a Belgian waffle iron. Yesterday I used it to bake up cake batter. Very tasty! The complication: I asked Sabrina what she'd eaten for breakfast this morning and she kinda looked embarrassed and said "um... a waffle??". Yeah, just cause it has those square divots in it doesn't make it acceptable breakfast food! lol via Facebook

January 05, 2014 at 06:40PM A Science Teacher Lost 37 Pounds From Eating Nothing But McDonald's

"We all have choices. It's our choices that make us fat, not McDonald's." His route may be an extreme one (restricted only to McDonald's), but it makes an interesting point. We can't blame a restaurant or a particular food for making us fat. It's all about how we manage it and what else we do with ourselves!

January 01, 2014 at 06:37PM

Last night we were talking about some of the highlights of 2013, then some wishes / goals for 2014. The favorite moments were mostly family activities. (Our 36 hour vacation in Vernal, 3 day family reunion in Cedar City, fostering kittens, adopting kittens, going to the Nickelcade together, taking care of Pierre and Nikola --even though they didn't' survive, Kate's 2 night school "Summer Camp".... ) The wishes were much of the same. (for this year to be as good as last year when we got to go on "all those vacations", etc.) The one that got me the most was when Sabrina said "I would love it if we could do some saving and extra work so we could buy Kate and Lizzie new scooters." None of them wished for Disneyland, or fancy gifts for themselves. None of them hopes for something to separate themselves from their sisters or parents (no "my own phone" or "getting my sisters out of my room"). What more can a mama wish or hope for with her family? via Facebook
