September 14, 2014 at 02:42PM Fake service dogs: A shame...and a crime

I have extremely strong opinions on people who fake disabilities or special needs of any sort for what they see as "benefits". Stop and think about the people who legitimately need these services or accommodations. As soon as you take on their challenges you're welcome to take a specially trained animal into the store to make sure you're safe because you require the help of an animal to get through daily life. You're welcome to park in one of those closest spaces because you physically cannot walk wherever you want to any time you want to. You're welcome to board the plane first because you cannot navigate the tight confines without significant pain or difficulty. As soon as you live every day of your life with severe inconvenience and difficulty you can hope for some extra help from others in areas that would be next to impossible without that assistance. Every time you pretend to need help you are abusing that assistance. Ever time someone knows you fake a need it makes them trust those with real need less and less. Every time you make light of real disabilities you cause problems for people who struggle to do every day things you take for granted. Do you know what it's like to need help to shower? what it's like to not be able to reach what you need at the grocery store? what it's like to be in so much pain you can barely face walking to the bathroom? what it's like to depend on an animal for companionship, assistance, or watching out for dangerous symptoms? Just wanting to have your little snookie poo with you is no reason to make life nearly impossible for all those people who understand those things too well. It's selfish, immature, and just plain wrong. Remember that next time you're going to just "run in really fast" to the store so you take the close parking spot. Or when you think it would be hilarious to play tag in those motorized carts. Or when you think it would be more convenient to carry an unnecessary cane to get priority seating on a plane. And TEACH YOUR KIDS all these things. Have a little compassion. And appreciate your healthy body! Even if you're "really sick and need to get medicine", be grateful that soon you'll be well again, as opposed to those who will not be. Please.
