Anybody in the neighborhood missing a big gray cat? A neighbor just asked if s/he was ours, (it's obviously not), and it's got a broken paw :( via Facebook

I went to the dentist today. I'm very proud of myself for surviving. And awesome news -- my cavities are all superficial!!! We were afraid we were looking at several crowns, but at least for now I'm good with fillings. Yay!!!! This is life with hardly any enamel on your teeth. And yeah, it's only been a year since my last visit. Hooray for now having dental insurance so we don't have excuses to put off visits. The girls have no enamel on their baby teeth, though we're thrilled that their adult teeth seem okay. All in all, a very successful round at the dentist! (also: the things we get excited about in adulthood are stupid.) via Facebook

January 20, 2015 at 01:48PM Global Rich List

This is quite interesting. And a little humbling as well. Even the year we made next to nothing (in our estimation) and required all sorts of help just to cover the "necessities" we were still making more money than over 75% of the people in the world. Yeah, we can make comparisons in cost of living and all that, but the truth is that when you look worldwide the "top 1%" includes a great many Americans. How different could attitudes be if we considered how wealthy we are as a nation and even as individuals, rather than focusing only on how much more we want. http://ift.tt/esnLXq

I am pretty good about not focusing on all the things that could go wrong, but otherwise? Yeah, this is me. I could be the face of social anxiety... but I don't want my picture taken. Or too much attention. Edit: because I got all nervous and forgot to add the link... http://ift.tt/1DJoCm6

Nathan Fillion, Sharon Gless, Snoop Dog, lunch meat and cheese, cartoon cars, magic elevator, Costco samples, a Canadian and a theif. That was one heck of a dream! When I was thinking about it just after waking up (when it still made sense ) I actually found myself in fits of laughter. Wish I could remember all the details now. via Facebook

Soap Box Moment: I can't count the number of times I've heard something along these general lines: "my mother was such an amazing lady. She had [whatever] health problems but she never let it slow her down and never complained or talked to anyone about it! She was so brave/strong/whatever that she could do anything anyway." I'm tired of the idea that playing superman / wonder woman somehow makes someone a better person. Since when is it saint-like to push beyond what is wise? Since when are we judged by how well we ignore reality? Since when are we supposed to fake who we are and what we experience in order to be thought well of by those closest to us? Please note, I am talking about our relationships with those closest to us. I'm talking about family and closest friendships that should be "safe" places to be ourselves. Should we be able to put on a brave face in front of people in general? Certainly. Nobody is going to be interested in dealing with all the challenges of people they only casually know (see also: facebook pet peeves of everybody ever ;) ). No, I am certainly NOT a proponent of whining, complaining, or giving up. And focusing on someone else's concerns while putting yours aside is a wonderful thing. Giving up is not an attractive character trait. There has to be balance, though, between pushing ourselves to be better and accepting what we have to deal with. Whether it's pretending to be happy when you're fighting depression or making yourself worse by pretending you're not ill or injured, it shouldn't be necessary to do so all the time in a healthy close relationship. Please, please, quit idolizing loved ones for hiding who they are and what they're dealing with. It only makes it worse. It makes people feel that even in those relationships they have to hide what they're feeling and who they are. No, it's not easy to accept limitations. Not for yourself and not in your loved ones. But imagine wrestling dark depression or fighting pain or any sort of suffering and feeling completely alone, like there isn't anybody or any place where it is safe to discuss the issue, be allowed to say no while someone understands, or just plain vent. Perhaps people will feel like it's okay to take care of themselves if others will quit saying that they're better if they hide their challenges. via Facebook
