Very interesting view on sports in schools. My personal opinion is that schools should lead us to personal improvement. Many sports can be done individually and with minimal expense / equipment. Those are the things that are going to be of the most value long term anyway. Sports = great. But not the way they are currently running our schools. Community or Club teams would be a better way to keep things on track. (Fairly long read, but not as long as it looks! only about half of the scroll bar shown ;) )

Kids get home and I suddenly feel like I was driven over by the bus! This keeps happening to me lately -- I can feel "good" all day, but as soon as I'm back on deck in Mama mode I can barely keep my eyes open or see straight. I finally gave up and accepted that I needed a trip to the dentist. Yesterday I hurt a molar, felt like it may have cracked. Just now, we stopped at Wendy's between doctors appointment and dentist appointment. one bite of a chicken sandwich and nearly half of the molar broke off. I hate my teeth. SEP's today for the girls (Parent-Teacher Conferences). Last year the school tried moving them to mid-terms instead of the end of each term. It's great since it gives everyone a chance to improve things that need improvement BEFORE report cards, instead of after. Progress reports for ALL THREE GIRLS: straight A's!!!! (Well, straight E's. But E=A, probably for the sake of kids not feeling bad about themselves? It's probably federally mandated ;) ) All three are also above grade level in reading and doing great in math and other subjects. Two of them missed turning in a couple of homework packets, but if we can keep on top of homework I think it will have been a very successful first semester. Way to go, girls! I especially love hearing that you're responsible, kind to everyone, obedient, and hard workers! via Facebook

Looking with my niece (3yo) at some pictures of her with her new baby brother: me: "Can you tell me what his name is?" M: "it's Matthew. or Squirt." She would only call him Squirt, except when I pointed out that 'Matthew' starts with an 'M', just like her name. (She pointed out an 'M' in a book we were reading). She thought that might merit consideration at a later date. Looking at pictures again: M, in a very soft and sweet voice: "See how cute and how little he is? ..... You should never kick a baby. Our kitties are far too clever. They all know where the "magic dot" comes from. When someone is playing with them and puts the laser dot in an inaccessible place, or stops playing "too soon", they will sit and stare in a most pouty fashion until we get it back out. Just this evening, I had been playing with the cats but got tired of it. I put the laser down. A few minutes later Shuri came over and jumped up to tease the laser pointer back down until Lizzie picked it up to play with them again. On the other end of the spectrum: this last litter of kittens caught on to the laser pointer game, but couldn't figure out when or how it happened. If they lost track of The Dot (or if we put it away) they'd go back to the last place they'd seen it. It was pretty funny the first time we walked back into a room and saw a kitten sitting with her nose in the corner waiting patiently for The Dot to return. via Facebook

These are the kittens we've been fostering. They're going tomorrow to an adoption event in SLC Petsmart at 389 West 1830 S. These girls are gorgeous with unusual torbie coloring. Oscar is pretty friendly and gets along great with other cats too. The girls are still fairly shy, but are warming up nicely. They've been spayed / neutered, immunized, and are microchipped. Turns out Kate came in 4th in elections. Which means she is the first of three non-titled member of student council. Good work Kate! My biased side is surprised and bummed that she didn't pull 3rd (which would have been her favorite place as secretary), but if she can shrug it off and be satisfied then I guess I'd better do the same ;) I did promise her a "party" today regardless of how the voting went, so the girls are enjoying Chex Muddy Buddies for their after school snack now. In the mean time: this is a doozy of a storm AGAIN! What is up with the weather this month?!?!?! It's dark with practically non-stop thunder and lightning with rain pouring down. Reason 1,342 my girls amaze me: I just dropped off Kate for orchestra before school and got back to finish getting the other two ready to go. Lizzie pointed out that Kate missed a straw for her drink in her lunch box. I was about to reassure her that Kate could figure out how to drink it without a straw or use a school straw, but Lizzie continued, explaining that she usually sees Kate during recess just before lunch so she'd put the extra straw in her pocket. She'll use her recess time finding her sister to take her a straw. Love it. via Facebook

Part of Lizzie's homework packet for this week she has to write a paragraph about someone who has taught something by example. She came to me, rather concerned, and asked me what she should write about. I asked her who she has learned things from by example. She said "Well, I know someone, but I don't really think school is the best place to write about it." So I asked her to tell me about it instead. She told me about things she has learned through Jesus Christ's example. It was really very tender. Then we talked about things she's learned through other people's examples, all the way from her big sister, her *little* sister, other extended family members, people whose names she doesn't even know, etc.. It ended up being a great little talk. And we talked about choosing appropriate topics in different situations. She said she just didn't think it felt right to write about that for school, even though it is a good thing to write about. I think it was a very good conversation about selecting appropriate subjects for different audiences. It doesn't have to do with being ashamed of things that you believe in, it has to do with the right time and the right place.

Chromecast = awesome. We've had ours for a few weeks now. The other night i wanted to show off some pictures and I was able to cast a tab and drop the pics there to show them on the TV instead of begging people to huddle over my shoulder. Right now I just had a classical channel playing on Pandora. When Michael wanted to be able to hear too, I just cast the tab and now it's playing off the tv instead! Plus the usual casting movies / tv shows / etc. All in all, very cool! via Facebook
