Having a challenging day. Decided to stop at Krispy Kreme, thinking a single donut or two sounded like a decent bit of cheer. The drive through line is really long. So I decided to look if there was some crazy deal going on, or if this is normal. Sure enough, today you can buy a dozen, get a dozen for $1. Seems irresponsible to sit in line and skip the deal. Kate had her first day of work today. On Monday she decided to apply for a job at a fun local toy store. That night she sat down and created a resume and cover letter, then emailed them to the contact given for applicants. She received a list of follow up questions on Tuesday morning and had a request for an interview later. The next day she got the call offering a job! Today was her first day of work with training. She'll only be working a couple days a week for now, but can request more later, if she wants (perfect for a high schooler, in my opinion!). Kate will be working at Funfinity, a family owned toy /book /games /candy making/cake decorating store. It has been our go-to store for birthday parties pretty much the girls' whole lives. They have the kind of selection, retro toys, and friendly, knowledgeable staff that makes it a great place for a unique gift on the run. Plus, they gift wrap, so it's ideal for grabbing a gift last minute on the way to the party ;) Kate is 16, but never went through a "too cool for the toy store" phase. Heavens, we bought a gift there just last week for a friend of hers! She is great at discovering things that are fun that aren't as well known as whatever the "it" toy may be. Also, she "has to" play with games /toys and may even have to taste test their store - made fudge as part of work. This is perfect for her! She came home happy and energetic tonight and is particularly looking forward to working on Halloween during the downtown trick - or-treat fun! And she did it entirely on her own. Interesting thing the girls have noticed -- when people approach their puppies most children ask permission before touching the dogs, but most adults do not, especially when the girls are holding their pups. ADULTS: it's lovely that you're teaching kids to ask first. YOU ARE NOT EXEMPT, REGARDLESS OF THE AGE OF THE PERSON HANDLING THE DOG. So far we've let our dogs be pet 100% of the time. That may not always be the case for any of several reasons. Perhaps the pup is wound up and being mouthy, perhaps the pup is sick, perhaps we're working on training that requires less intervention. YOU do not get to assume the animal is available. Especially when laws are tough on dogs who mistreat a person, it's not acceptable to put an unknown situation where they may feel the need to protect themselves, then blame them for their actions. Not your dog? Not your right to touch. (Note: this is all about respecting pets. Service dogs are a whole different issue, but if you can't leave a pet alone you're probably overstepping there, too. Just finished seeing A Quiet Place. The last "scary movie" I saw was...hmmm, either What Lies Beneath or Sixth Sense. Basically, it's been a while. I actually am really impressed by how will this was done with a tiny cast and minimal sound. I feel like this story could have been told in any if several genres (it's not an inherently horrorrific story, necessarily), but the emotional tension was incredible. I did take my Eeyore stuffed animal with me. I am glad I did. I think the movie was great, and even better with something to hug. There are the expected jump- scares, but very little blood/ gore. I went to a 10am showing this morning which was much fuller than I'd have expected (20ish people, probably) but dead quiet through it all. Crazy viewing experience. A few days back I followed my child into the costume morgue in the bowels of the high school. In college I spent many, many hours crammed between costume racks (I worked in the university costume studio for the theater department). I can't believe the visceral reaction that hit me with the scent of old cotton, sweat stained wool, and the mix of other fabrics and the horrifying things that happen to them in their usage. Tonsillectomy, pt 4?-- Being admitted for the night. Sabrina is pretty comfortable right now, and feeling much better rested after a good nap. Her heart rate is running a little high, bp was a little high, and o2 is 94ish. They'll keep monitoring and will administer oxygen as necessary over night then see how she's doing.
