August 30, 2014 at 08:03PM The Sad Truth About Bullying at Church

This is excellent. And sadly true. Don't overlook bullying simply because it "should" be a safe place such as at church (or in the home, with people who have previously been friends, at a family reunion, in the workplace, etc. etc. etc.). I don't see this as something specific to Churches, I see this as a statement regarding people. I am embarrassed to admit that I once stood in the role of a church bully. I had made a few snide remarks as a young teenager, thinking they were obviously ridiculous and not intended to be taken seriously. Unfortunately that is not the way it was taken. Fortunately I had a kind youth leader who gathered me up and explained what was going on and how the thoughtless remarks had been taken. I did not intend to be a bully! And I really don't think most bullies intend their actions to come across that way, especially at first. TALK to people! Make sure they know when something is hurtful! Find a mediator or someone to help discuss the matter calmly if necessary. On the side of the "bullee": you can start as simply as letting the "bully" know that what they're saying / doing is hurtful. Taking only a passive role (turn the other cheek) won't always do everything necessary. We are striving for compassion with that direction, not rug-like behavior. On the side of the "bully" (or potential bully): be aware of how others respond to what you think is funny. Is it intended to get people to point AT *or* WITH a particular person or group? Different people can respond differently to the very same words or actions, so do your best to be aware of how you make people feel. You enter true "Bully" land if you continue to do or say something knowing it hurts someone. If there is reason for you to know that what you are doing is hurtful then you're headed there quick! And as a "Bullee" you cannot expect behavior to change unless the "Bully" knows what is going on. Rambling much? Basically: be aware of one another and communicate when something is un-happy making! Let's try to keep areas around us safe in every way possible, including bully-free. :)

The whole "sitting while the car is brought around" was interrupted. Michael and the girls were distracted by a fabulous jewelry sale at Schubach Jewelry so they came and fetched me there instead. I'll play it cool, though, since we got some gorgeous raw sapphire jewelry for 80% off plus 15% more off after that! I liked plenty of jewelry there, but nothing really excited me until I saw this stuff. It has somewhat more ornate settings with a "heritage" sort of feel and larger opaque stones. Chocolate, shoes, jewelry... we're just missing flowers! via Facebook

Last one for now. Yes, I've seen the posts to the effect that "you don't have to pour ice water over your head to donate to charity". Which is totally true. But this is also the most effective campaign I've ever seen to bring awareness to a rare disease. Living with several rare / lesser known / little studied diseases of my own this makes me grateful for the power of social media. To ice water or not? I don't care. But pass on the information. Learn something. Teach your kids. Reach out to those millions who live with some variety of disease that isn't a big enough money maker for the corporations to bother helping with the pain and suffering! BTW: Kaylee Allen, Kaitlyn Metler... enjoy ;)

Lizzie was nominated! (Larcy West Mortensen) She decided to keep it in the family, so we'll be busy dumping more water this afternoon! Good luck Kate, Sabrina, and Michael :)

I'm really enjoying the fact that Kate (jr. high) gets home most of an hour before her sisters (elementary). It gives us a little quiet time to talk about things. Today, after covering the daily complexities of 7th grade life, we discussed the details of living on a budget, starting at the bottom to get to where we want to be (career-wise), and other career and life related questions. She is really enjoying her CTE (careers technology and economics... or something like that) class and this is all part of her current area of study. It's great to sit and look at her imaginary job and budget and help her find places she can cut back, discuss why one job may earn more money than another, figure out how to fit everything into the day, and all those things. Now the other girls are home and things are getting more chaotic, but I can see this time being precious to both of us through the school year. via Facebook

Haircuts! Kate and Sabrina basically got trims. Lizzie got a super cute stacked bob. All the red dye from last December (November? I forget) is finally trimmed off of Lizzie's hair! Sabrina still appears to be a strawberry blonde since it grows so very slowly. Thanks for the cuts, Jessica! via Instagram http://ift.tt/1veQ6vy

I love listening to rain and thunder storms! It's so relaxing to my mind and calming to my soul. Unfortunately, my body does not love it so much. I'm like a barometer with my body yelling every time there's a big change in pressure (and thus, weather change), and screaming out with every storm; the colder it is the worse it gets. This morning I was able to take steps all the way up to 8" long for the first few hours. So if you ever wonder why I prefer the idea of hibernation in the winter, preferably in a medically induced coma, now you know. via Facebook

August 22, 2014 at 02:00PM What Is Your Hippie Name?

"Flower": You're a delicate little flower that nobody would ever want to hurt. Don't let your appearance fool them though. You have a totally groovy side to you that only comes out when you're with your friends having a good time. You're constantly growing as a person, just like a flower grows each day. Yes, I might be putting off things I'm feeling guilty about not doing... Yay procrastination quizzes!

Yes, I drove to the Jr. High in the middle of the morning drop-off rush wearing leopard print footie pajamas. Kate picked up the violin from the car. And bless her heart, she didn't even bat an eyelash at what I was wearing right there in front of everyone! via Facebook

Second day of school and I had a child home sick. Awesome. BUT we did get good news from the doctor! Not contagious, and treatable. Yay!!! Last Saturday she accidentally poked herself in the back of her throat with a straw. It apparently broke the skin and has become infected. Ouch! So hooray for antibiotics and analgesics :) via Facebook
